The rumors we mentioned last week are no rumours anymore. Google acquired Fitbit for USD 2.1bn in cash (USD 7.35 per share) and pits Google against fellow tech giants Apple and Samsung in the wearable fitness tracking space. Fitbit has 28 million active users worldwide and has sold more than 100 million devices. In the announcement, Google specified that «Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads. … and we will give Fitbit users the choice to review, move, or delete their data.» [≈ 8min]

Xiaomi, a chinese Tech giant, offers everything from headphones and fitness bands to tablets and power strips and water purifiers. In 2018, Xiaomi was the world’s fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer, leading in both the largest market, China, and the second-largest market, India. This week Xiaomi unveiled its new Mi Watch bearing a striking resemblance to the Apple Watch. The Chinese company is well known for offering top-notch hardware quality but also for stealing the best designs from competition, as this device clearly shows. [≈ 2min]
